NYU vs Brown for economics: which is better for an undergraduate econ major?

I’m trying to narrow down my college list and keep coming back to NYU and Brown for economics. I’m interested in studying econ as an undergraduate and want a place where the major is strong and well supported.

I’m mostly trying to understand which school is generally considered better for an economics major and why.

For undergraduate economics, Brown is often the stronger academic choice if you want a more traditional liberal arts environment, close access to faculty, and flexibility to combine econ with other interests through the Open Curriculum. Brown’s econ department is very well regarded, and undergrads benefit from a campus culture that strongly emphasizes undergraduate teaching and exploration. NYU is especially appealing if you want economics in a more urban, professionally connected setting, with easy proximity to finance, policy, and business-related opportunities in New York City.

Brown tends to fit students who want economics as part of a broad intellectual education rather than as a purely pre-professional track. If you can picture yourself pairing econ with math, political science, computer science, or public policy, Brown makes that easy and attractive. The advising culture and undergraduate focus can make it simpler to build relationships with professors, which matters for research, recommendations, and grad school.

NYU makes more sense for students who want to be embedded in a major city and take advantage of internships during the academic year. That is a real advantage for someone interested in finance, consulting, economic policy, media, or data-oriented work tied to New York. NYU’s economics offerings are strong, and the broader university ecosystem gives you access to a lot of practical exposure, but the experience can feel more career-driven and less classically residential.

If the question is pure academic reputation in undergraduate economics, Brown usually has the edge. If the question is where an econ major can turn coursework into internships and city-based experience most easily, NYU has a compelling case.
