How do Boston University and UC Berkeley compare for computer science?

I'm trying to narrow down my college list and these two keep coming up. I know they have very different reputations and campus environments, but I'm not sure how to compare them for computer science specifically.

I want to understand how they stack up in terms of CS strength, opportunities, and overall fit for a student interested in the field.

For computer science specifically, UC Berkeley has the stronger overall reputation and a deeper CS ecosystem. Berkeley is one of the most established names in the field, with exceptional faculty, heavy recruiting from major tech companies, and close ties to the Bay Area startup and engineering scene. Boston University is still a solid option, especially for a student who wants an urban private-university experience, but it does not carry the same level of CS prominence as Berkeley.

Berkeley makes the most sense for a student who wants to be surrounded by a very large, intense, high-powered CS culture. You would find more peers deeply focused on research, advanced technical work, startups, and top-tier industry roles, and the campus has a long track record in AI, systems, theory, data science, and entrepreneurship. The tradeoff is that Berkeley can feel highly competitive, classes may be large, and the path through CS can feel less personal and more self-directed.

BU fits a student who wants strong CS training in a somewhat more contained environment and values structure, city life, and the feel of a private institution. Being in Boston gives you access to internships, tech employers, and a broader academic community, and BU students can still do research, software engineering internships, and project-based work. Compared with Berkeley, though, the CS network is less dominant nationally, and the surrounding tech scene is strong but not as concentrated around big-name computing firms and startups as the Bay Area.

If your main priority is studying computer science at the highest level with the biggest built-in reputation and industry pull, Berkeley stands out. If you care a lot about being in Boston or prefer BU's campus style, BU can still be a very worthwhile choice.
