Is Boston University or Columbia more prestigious?

I’m trying to compare these two schools from a reputation standpoint, not just based on rankings. I know both are well known, but I keep hearing different opinions about which one is considered more prestigious overall.

I’m mainly curious how people generally perceive Boston University versus Columbia in terms of academic reputation and name recognition.

Columbia is more prestigious overall. In broad public recognition, employer perception, and academic reputation, Columbia carries a distinctly higher-status name, helped by its Ivy League identity, long historical profile, and stronger association with elite national and global academic circles. Boston University is well respected and very well known, but it is not usually placed in the same reputation tier.

One clear differentiator is how each school is perceived academically across fields. Columbia is commonly seen as one of the country’s most elite research universities, and that reputation extends well beyond a few departments. BU has many strong programs and a solid national reputation, especially in areas like communications, business, health-related fields, and international studies, but its overall brand is viewed as excellent rather than topmost.

Another difference is name recognition at the highest prestige level. Columbia’s name tends to carry immediate weight internationally and among people who pay close attention to higher education, finance, law, academia, and other selective professional spaces. Boston University is widely recognized too, especially in the U.S., but the reaction is more often “strong, respected university” rather than “top-tier elite institution.”

The alumni and institutional associations also shape perception. Columbia benefits from its connection to New York City, major research output, prominent graduate and professional schools, and a long list of highly visible alumni and faculty. BU has a large and influential alumni network of its own, but from a pure prestige standpoint, most people would place it below Columbia by a noticeable margin.
