Is Boston University or Columbia better for pre med?

I'm trying to decide between Boston University and Columbia, and I want to go pre med. Both seem like strong schools, but I keep seeing people say that the best choice depends on things like advising, access to research, and how competitive the environment feels.

I’m a high school senior trying to pick the college that would give me the best overall setup for med school preparation.

Columbia has the edge for pre med because of its direct connection to a major academic medical center, the sheer density of research and hospital opportunities around campus, and the strength of its science departments. Being tied to Columbia University Irving Medical Center gives undergraduates unusually close proximity to physicians, labs, and clinical environments that matter for med school preparation.

Research access is a major differentiator. Columbia students are plugged into a huge biomedical ecosystem in New York, and that can make it easier to find labs across neuroscience, public health, cancer biology, and related fields without needing to leave the university system. BU also offers real research opportunities, especially through its medical campus and nearby Boston hospitals, but Columbia’s integration with its own medical center is especially valuable.

Clinical exposure is another point in Columbia’s favor. New York gives you broad access to hospitals, patient populations, and public health settings, and Columbia’s location makes shadowing, volunteering, and health-focused community work easier to build into a long-term pre med path. BU is also in a strong city for medicine, but its undergraduate campus and medical campus are less tightly connected in day-to-day student life.

The advising piece is more mixed. BU has a reputation for being very serious about pre health support and for having a large pre med population, so there are established systems in place. Columbia’s advising is also strong, but the environment can feel more intense, and some students find the pressure level higher.

One caveat that matters: GPA is crucial for med school, so the better pre med school is not always the one with the bigger name. If you believe you would be noticeably happier, more supported, and more academically steady at BU, that could outweigh Columbia’s structural advantages.
