Is the University of Washington or Boston College considered more prestigious for college admissions and job recruiting?

I’m trying to decide between these two schools and keep seeing people describe both as “prestigious” in different ways. I’m a high school senior and want to understand how they’re generally viewed by admissions people and employers, not just by rankings.

I’m mostly looking for a straightforward comparison of overall reputation.

The biggest practical tradeoff is breadth and scale versus private-school brand consistency. The University of Washington has a very strong national reputation, especially in tech, engineering, computer science, medicine, and research, and its size gives it huge academic depth. Boston College tends to project a more uniformly polished private-university image, especially in the Northeast and in fields like business, finance, political science, and pre-law.

In pure overall reputation, both are respected, but they are respected in somewhat different ways. UW is often seen as a major public flagship with standout strength in high-impact academic and professional areas. Boston College is often seen as a well-regarded private university with a strong alumni network and a reputation that can feel more traditional or elite-adjacent in certain East Coast circles.

For college admissions audiences, Boston College may read as more conventionally prestigious to people who put weight on private-school branding. For employers, the answer depends more on industry and region. In tech, research, healthcare, and many STEM-heavy settings, UW can carry at least as much weight and sometimes more. In finance, consulting, some business roles, and Northeast professional networks, Boston College can have an edge in name perception and alumni reach.

So if the question is overall prestige in a broad, everyday sense, Boston College probably has a slight advantage in perceived polish and private-school status. If the question is employer respect across major industries, especially technical and research-driven ones, UW is absolutely on that level and in some sectors stronger.
