Is University of Washington worth it compared with NYU for undergraduate students?

For most undergraduates, University of Washington is absolutely worth choosing over NYU if cost matters at all, because UW can deliver excellent academics, major research access, and a more traditional campus experience without NYU-level price pressure. UW is especially strong in fields like computer science, engineering, business, public health, and environmental sciences, and it offers the resources of a major public research university in a true college campus setting. NYU has clear advantages in New York City access and certain industry pipelines, but many students do not get enough extra academic value to justify the gap in cost.

The biggest differentiator is value. UW is widely respected by employers and graduate programs, and for many majors the degree carries serious weight, especially across the West Coast and in tech-related fields. If you would need substantial loans for NYU but can attend UW at a much lower cost, that difference can shape your options after graduation far more than the name on the diploma.

The academic structure also feels different in ways that matter. UW gives you access to a large research university with strong faculty, labs, and interdisciplinary opportunities, but it also has the complexity of a big public school, including competitive capacity-constrained majors in some departments. NYU can offer impressive academic and professional access too, but its urban setup is less cohesive as a residential college experience, and some students find that it feels more like living in the city than belonging to a central campus community.

Student life is another real separation point. UW has a classic campus in Seattle, school spirit, green space, and a more defined undergraduate environment. NYU gives you the energy and networking possibilities of Manhattan, but the tradeoff is a more decentralized social life and a much higher day-to-day cost of living.

One important exception is if your goals depend heavily on being embedded in New York from day one, such as certain paths in finance, entertainment, media, fashion, or arts industries. In those areas, NYU’s location can create a level of access that UW does not match as directly.
