Is the University of Washington harder to get into than Penn State?

I'm trying to figure out how competitive these two schools are as I build my college list. I know both are popular public universities, but I keep seeing people compare them in different ways.

I mostly want to understand which one is generally harder to get into for a typical high school applicant.

The biggest practical tradeoff is that University of Washington is typically more selective overall, while Penn State is often a bit more accessible for a broad range of applicants, especially if you are looking at the main admission pool rather than a highly impacted major. UW gets a very large volume of applications and, for many students, admission can feel especially tight because some programs are far more competitive than the university as a whole. Penn State is still a popular flagship with plenty of strong applicants, but it is usually not viewed as quite as difficult to enter in the same overall way.

For a typical high school applicant, UW is usually harder to get into than Penn State. That is especially true for out-of-state students and for applicants interested in majors like computer science, engineering, or business-related paths where capacity is limited and competition rises sharply. At UW, your intended academic direction can matter a lot because getting into the university does not always mean easy access to every major later.

Penn State admissions can also vary by campus, entry term, and program, which sometimes gives applicants more pathways. University Park is the most sought-after option, so that is the right comparison point, but even there the process is often seen as less intense than UW Seattle. Penn State can sometimes offer alternatives such as a different campus or summer start, which changes how reachable it is for some students.

So if the question is simply which school is harder to get into for the average applicant, the clearer answer is University of Washington, especially the Seattle campus.
