Which is better for journalism: Cornell or Columbia?

I’m trying to decide between Cornell and Columbia and keep seeing both come up when people talk about journalism. I know they’re very different schools overall, but I want to understand which one tends to be the better choice for someone interested in journalism as a career.

I’m mostly looking at the general strength of the journalism path and the kind of opportunities each school is known for.

Columbia has the clearer edge for journalism. Its journalism ecosystem is much more established, anchored by the Columbia Journalism School, the Pulitzer Prizes, and a direct location in New York City that puts students near major national newsrooms. For someone who already sees journalism as a serious career path, Columbia usually offers stronger visibility, deeper industry ties, and more obvious day-to-day access to reporting opportunities.

The biggest differentiator is institutional focus. Columbia is one of the most recognized names in journalism in the country, and that reputation affects everything from alumni networks to speaker access to the professional culture around reporting. Even as an undergraduate, being at a university so closely associated with journalism means you are surrounded by that field in a way Cornell does not really match.

The second is location. Columbia students are in Manhattan, which matters a lot for journalism because internships, freelance assignments, events, and media networking are often local and immediate. Being able to reach major publications, broadcast outlets, and nonprofit media organizations during the semester is a real advantage, not just a nice extra.

Cornell is a great university, but journalism is not one of its signature strengths in the same way. It can still work well, especially through writing, communications, policy, government, or specialized reporting interests, and Cornell students can absolutely build strong media careers. But the path is usually more self-directed, whereas at Columbia the journalism route is more built into the school’s identity and opportunities.
