Harvard vs Northwestern for communication studies: which is better for undergrads?

Northwestern is the stronger undergraduate choice for communication studies. Its School of Communication is one of the university’s signature divisions, undergrads have unusually direct access to communication-focused courses and performance/media opportunities, and the program is built around areas like human communication sciences, theatre, radio-television-film, and communication studies in a way Harvard simply is not.

One major difference is academic structure. At Northwestern, communication is a central undergraduate home with a dedicated school, established departments, and many classes that directly match interests in media, public speaking, persuasion, performance, and interpersonal communication. Harvard is excellent overall, but it does not have the same undergraduate communication infrastructure; students interested in adjacent fields often piece together courses through areas like sociology, psychology, English, theater, film, or government rather than entering a comparably focused communication program.

Another differentiator is practical experience. Northwestern undergrads benefit from a campus culture that is deeply tied to speech, debate, theatre, journalism, student media, and entertainment pathways, and that tends to create more built-in outlets for applying communication skills outside the classroom. For someone who wants to study media and public speaking in a hands-on way, that ecosystem matters a lot. Harvard offers plenty of extracurricular opportunities too, but they are not anchored by an undergraduate communication school in the same way.

The one real reason to choose Harvard here is if you want a broader liberal arts path and expect to explore communication through neighboring disciplines rather than through a dedicated undergraduate communication program.
