Which has the better campus: Williams or Bowdoin?
I’m trying to compare the overall campus feel between these two schools and I keep seeing people describe them differently. I care a lot about the physical setting, how pretty and walkable the campus is, and whether it feels cozy or isolated.
I know both are small liberal arts colleges, but I’m mostly trying to understand which one has the better campus experience day to day.

For day to day campus feel, this usually comes down to what kind of setting feels more appealing to you, because both campuses are beautiful but in very different ways. Williams feels more spread out, mountain-framed, and a bit more secluded, while Bowdoin feels more compact, classic New England, and more connected to an actual town center. If you care most about walkability and a cozy layout, Bowdoin often lands better. If you want dramatic scenery and a quieter, more tucked-away atmosphere, Williams tends to stand out.
Bowdoin is a strong match for someone who wants a campus that feels intimate without feeling cut off. The college sits right in Brunswick, and Maine Street runs alongside campus, so coffee shops, restaurants, and everyday errands are woven into student life in a way that feels natural. The campus itself is very walkable, centered around quads and traditional brick buildings, and it tends to feel cohesive and easy to navigate.
Williams fits the student who wants a more rural, immersive college environment where the campus and landscape are a big part of the experience. Williamstown is smaller and quieter than Brunswick, and the Berkshires give the school a striking backdrop, especially in fall. The setting is gorgeous, but it can feel more isolated in a real way, and the campus is a little less compact in how it unfolds.
In terms of prettiness, both have a strong case, just with different aesthetics. Bowdoin has that polished, classic, coastal-New England-adjacent charm, even though it is not directly on the water. Williams has a more expansive, outdoorsy beauty, with open views and a stronger sense of being surrounded by nature.
For everyday campus experience, Bowdoin often feels more cozy and convenient. Williams often feels more serene and scenic.
