Which is better for business: Washington University in St. Louis or the University of Michigan?

I’m trying to decide between WashU and Michigan and I’m interested in business, but I keep seeing people rank them differently depending on the program. I know both are strong schools overall, so I’m mostly trying to understand which one tends to be the better choice for a business-focused undergrad experience.

For undergraduate business, the University of Michigan has the clearer edge. Its Ross School of Business is one of the most established and visible undergrad business programs in the country, with a deeper recruiting pipeline, a larger alumni network in business, and more breadth across areas like finance, consulting, marketing, and tech. WashU is an excellent university, but Michigan is the school more employers and applicants immediately associate with undergraduate business.

One major difference is the business school itself. Ross is a dedicated, highly developed undergraduate business ecosystem with signature programs, action-based learning, and strong student organizations tied directly to recruiting. At WashU, Olin is respected and can offer more individual attention, but it does not carry the same national weight at the undergraduate level as Ross.

The student experience also differs in a practical way. Michigan offers the energy and resources of a large public university, which can mean more clubs, competitions, and recruiting events tied specifically to business. WashU can feel smaller and more personal, which some students prefer, but for a business-focused undergrad looking for the broadest set of opportunities and strongest brand in the field, Michigan stands out more.
