Is Virginia Tech or NC State more fun for undergrads?

I’m trying to decide between Virginia Tech and NC State, and I keep hearing different things about campus life at both schools. I care a lot about having a social scene, school spirit, and enough stuff to do on weekends.

I know “fun” is subjective, but I’m mainly looking for which one tends to feel more lively and enjoyable for a regular undergrad.

Virginia Tech tends to feel more fun for the typical undergrad if you mean an immersive campus atmosphere with stronger school spirit and a more unified social scene. Blacksburg is very centered on the university, football weekends are a major event, and the student culture is unusually all-in on campus traditions. NC State absolutely has plenty to do, but its social life is shaped more by being in Raleigh than by a single dominant campus vibe.

One big difference is how much the town revolves around the school. Virginia Tech is in a classic college town, so weekends, restaurants, bars, and events often feel tied to student life. That usually creates a more concentrated social environment where it is easier to feel that everyone is participating in the same scene.

NC State has the advantage of a larger city around it, which can be fun in a different way. Raleigh gives students access to concerts, internships, off-campus food, sports, and nightlife beyond the university itself. But because students are more spread out and the campus is less isolated, the experience can feel a little less cohesive than at Virginia Tech.

School spirit is another area where Virginia Tech usually stands out. Its traditions, game-day culture, and overall campus pride are especially visible, and that often shapes day-to-day student energy even outside athletics. NC State has strong spirit too, especially around basketball and rivalry games, but it does not as consistently dominate the social atmosphere.

For a regular undergrad asking which campus feels more lively in the everyday, Virginia Tech has the edge. NC State is often more appealing for students who want their fun to come partly from city life rather than mostly from a tight campus community.
