Villanova vs Bucknell for pre-med: which is better for med school preparation?

I’m trying to decide between Villanova and Bucknell and I want to major in something pre-med friendly. Both seem like strong schools, but I’m mostly thinking about which one would give me the better preparation for med school and the right support along the way.

I’m not looking for a ranking in general, just which school tends to be the better fit for a student following the pre-med path.

Villanova has the edge for pre-med. It offers a larger health-focused ecosystem, easier proximity to major hospitals and research centers in the Philadelphia area, and a broad range of science and health-related opportunities that matter for med school preparation. For a student who wants strong advising plus easier access to clinical exposure, Villanova usually provides more built-in options.

One big differentiator is location. Villanova students can reach hospitals, clinics, and research institutions in and around Philadelphia far more easily than Bucknell students can from Lewisburg. That matters because pre-med students need sustained clinical experience, physician shadowing, volunteering, and sometimes research, and being near a major medical hub makes all of that simpler to arrange during the school year.

Another factor is the structure of pre-health support. Villanova has a well-established pre-health advising setup and enough scale to support many students aiming for medicine, dentistry, and related fields. Bucknell also advises pre-med students seriously, but Villanova’s larger university environment tends to create more course options, more student organizations tied to health careers, and more connections with alumni and nearby institutions.

Bucknell still has real strengths. Its smaller size can mean closer faculty relationships, strong teaching, and good access to professors for recommendation letters, which is important for med school applications. If you know you thrive in a more contained, residential liberal arts environment and are comfortable being more proactive about finding off-campus clinical opportunities, Bucknell can absolutely work well.

For most students choosing specifically on pre-med preparation, Villanova gives a more convenient runway: strong science academics, easier access to hands-on medical settings, and a surrounding region with far more healthcare infrastructure.
