Which has better school spirit, Villanova or Notre Dame?
I’m trying to get a feel for campus culture as I compare colleges, and school spirit is a big part of that for me.
Both Villanova and Notre Dame seem to have a strong sense of community, but I keep hearing different things about what it’s actually like day to day. I’m wondering which school is generally known for having the stronger school spirit.

Notre Dame is more widely known for stronger school spirit. Its campus culture is deeply tied to long-standing traditions, especially around football weekends, residence hall communities, and a very visible sense of shared identity that extends well beyond athletics. Villanova has real pride too, particularly around men’s basketball, but the intensity is usually more concentrated around certain sports and moments rather than shaping campus life as broadly.
One big difference is how central tradition is to the student experience. At Notre Dame, game days, hall events, campus symbols, and alumni loyalty are woven into everyday culture in a way few schools match. Even students who are not huge sports fans often describe a strong collective identity there.
Another difference is the scale and consistency of the sports atmosphere. Notre Dame’s football culture creates a campus-wide energy that tends to unify students, alumni, and fans throughout the season. Villanova absolutely comes alive during basketball season and big tournament runs, but it does not usually produce the same all-campus, all-year level of spirit.
The residential setup matters too. Notre Dame’s residence hall system is a major driver of belonging and loyalty, with each hall developing its own traditions and community. Notre Dame is the school more commonly associated with intense, visible, and enduring school spirit on a day-to-day basis.
