Is Rice generally as difficult to get into as Vanderbilt for undergraduate admission?

Rice and Vanderbilt are both highly selective for undergraduate admission, and neither should be treated as a noticeably easier option on an application list. They are often viewed as peers in selectivity, with year-to-year differences too small and applicant-dependent to support a reliable “easier” label. A student competitive at one may still be denied at the other because each school is building a particular class, not simply admitting applicants in score order.

Rice may make particular sense for applicants drawn to a smaller residential-campus setting, close faculty and peer connections, and an academic environment where intellectual fit comes through clearly in the application. Vanderbilt may resonate more with students who want a larger university setting with a wider range of campus activities and a strong sense of involvement across academic and extracurricular communities.

For both, strong grades in a demanding curriculum remain essential, but academic strength alone does not make admission predictable. Apply to both if each genuinely fits your goals, explain what you would contribute to each campus community, treat both as reaches, and maintain a balanced list with colleges where admission is more likely.
