Should I choose UVA or WashU for college if I’m deciding between the two?

I’m a junior starting to narrow down my college list, and UVA and WashU are both on it. They seem really different in terms of campus vibe, location, and overall student experience.

I’m trying to figure out how to compare them in a practical way before I apply.

The biggest practical tradeoff is this: UVA gives you a classic large public flagship experience with more school spirit, broader in-state value if you are a Virginia resident, and a college-town setting in Charlottesville, while WashU offers a smaller private-university environment with a more contained campus feel, and access to St. Louis. Those differences shape everyday life more than prestige does. UVA tends to feel bigger, more tradition-heavy, and more publicly visible, while WashU often feels more curated, residential, and intimate.

Academically, both are excellent, but they are strong in somewhat different ways. UVA is especially known for areas like business through McIntire, politics, public policy, economics, history, and strong humanities and social sciences overall. WashU stands out for pre-med, biology, neuroscience, engineering, research access, and strong support across the sciences, while also having respected programs in business, architecture, and the arts.

The student experience is meaningfully different. UVA has the energy of a major public university, with ACC sports, deep traditions, and a larger undergraduate population, so it can feel more socially self-directed. WashU is smaller and more residential, and many students find it easier to build close relationships with professors and campus communities early on.

Location matters too. Charlottesville is a true college town, scenic and centered around the university. WashU sits next to Forest Park and near several major institutions in St. Louis, which can be a real advantage for internships, research, and medical or cultural opportunities during the school year.

Cost should be a serious part of the comparison. If you are in-state for UVA, that price difference can be hard to ignore. If financial aid from WashU is strong, though, the gap may narrow enough that fit and academic priorities matter more.

If I were comparing them practically before applying, I would treat UVA as the better option for someone who wants the scale, traditions, and public flagship atmosphere, especially with strong interest in politics, policy, commerce, or a classic college-town experience. WashU makes more sense when you want a smaller private setting, especially if you are leaning pre-med, science-heavy, or want a campus culture that feels more contained and student-support driven.
