Is UVA or Duke better for social life?

I'm trying to decide between these two schools and keep hearing that both have strong campus cultures, but in different ways. As a current high school senior, I care a lot about finding a place where it's easy to make friends and have a fun social scene without feeling isolated.

I'm mostly trying to understand which school tends to feel more social overall.

The biggest practical difference is scale and structure: UVA’s social life is larger, more student-driven, and spread across a big public-campus culture, while Duke’s is more contained, more residential, and often easier to plug into quickly because so much happens on and around campus. At UVA, Greek life, student organizations, athletics, and the Charlottesville setting all shape a very active scene, but it can feel a little more decentralized. At Duke, the residential culture, school spirit around basketball, and the tighter campus footprint often make the social environment feel more concentrated and easier to navigate day to day.

If by “more social overall” you mean more visible, constant activity and a bigger range of social circles, UVA probably has the edge. There is a strong sense that a lot is always happening, and the size of the student body creates more variety in personalities, parties, clubs, and friend groups. That said, some students find UVA’s social scene takes more initiative at first, especially because the campus and social options are broader and less contained.

Duke often feels more immediately cohesive. Students tend to spend a lot of time on campus, and the shared enthusiasm around major traditions, especially basketball, creates a strong collective energy. Socially, that can make it easier to feel connected early, though some students experience Duke as a bit more intense or smaller-world socially because the community is tighter and more campus-centered.

So the answer depends on what “social” means to you. UVA tends to feel bigger, busier, and more expansive, while Duke tends to feel tighter, more immersive, and more consistently centered on campus. If you want the place that usually feels more social in the broadest sense, I’d give that to UVA. If you care more about a close-knit, highly engaged campus where it may be easier to find your people fast, Duke is very compelling.
