Is UVA worth the cost compared with Georgetown for college?

I’m trying to decide between UVA and Georgetown and keep going back and forth on whether the higher cost of one school would actually be worth it. I know both have strong reputations, but I’m mostly wondering how people think about value in terms of academics, network, and future opportunities.

I’m a high school junior/senior trying to make a realistic decision for my family, so I want to understand whether the extra money usually feels justified.

The biggest practical tradeoff is cost versus access: UVA usually gives you a more affordable path to a top-tier education, while Georgetown can offer a more concentrated advantage in Washington, DC internships, policy circles, and certain alumni networks. For many families, especially if UVA is in-state, the price gap is hard to justify unless Georgetown’s strengths line up directly with your goals. Both schools are highly respected nationally, and neither one will close off strong graduate school or career options.

In academics, the difference is not that one is excellent and the other is merely good. UVA is outstanding across a wide range of fields and has especially strong placement and reputation in business, politics, economics, and the humanities. Georgetown has a distinct edge if you are drawn to international relations, government, public policy, or careers that benefit from being in DC during the school year.

The network question depends on where you want that network to matter. Georgetown’s alumni base is influential in government, diplomacy, consulting, finance, and media, and its location makes networking feel built into campus life. UVA’s network is also powerful, very loyal, and especially strong on the East Coast, with major reach in business, law, finance, and public service.

For value, debt matters more than prestige differences this small. If Georgetown would require significantly more borrowing, UVA is usually the smarter financial decision because the long-term outcomes are unlikely to be different enough to justify a much larger bill. Paying extra for Georgetown makes more sense when the added cost is manageable for your family and you know you want the kind of DC-connected experience Georgetown delivers.
