UVA vs. William & Mary for pre-law: which is better for law school preparation?

I’m a junior trying to figure out which school would set me up better for law school. Both UVA and William & Mary seem strong academically, but I’m not sure how they compare for pre-law preparation.

I’m mostly interested in how well they build the skills and opportunities that matter before applying to law school.

William & Mary is still an excellent choice, especially for close faculty contact and a classic liberal arts feel, but UVA offers more breadth and scale.

One big difference is access to law-related opportunities during college. At UVA, students can tap into a wider set of internships, student organizations, research roles, and public service work connected to government, policy, and law. Being in Charlottesville also means learning alongside a major law school community, which can translate into events, speakers, and a campus culture where law is a very visible next step.

Another factor is academic flexibility. Law schools do not require a specific major, so what matters is developing strong reading, argumentation, writing, and analytical skills while earning high grades. UVA gives you more departments and course options to do that, whether through politics, history, economics, philosophy, public policy, English, or interdisciplinary work. That makes it easier to shape a pre-law path around your strengths instead of forcing yourself into one lane.

William & Mary stands out most in faculty access and discussion-based learning. Its smaller scale can make it easier to build close relationships with professors, which helps with mentorship and recommendation letters. It also has a strong government and history tradition, and for some students that more intimate environment is exactly what helps them thrive.

William & Mary can absolutely get you to law school, but UVA typically gives you more lanes to build a standout application before you get there.
