UT Austin vs University of Washington for internship opportunities and recruiting
I’m trying to decide between UT Austin and the University of Washington, and a big factor for me is internship access. I’m interested in getting practical experience during college and want to know which school gives students better access to internships and recruiting.
I’m mainly comparing how strong the local industry connections are and how easy it is for students to find internship opportunities while enrolled.

The biggest practical tradeoff is location versus reach: University of Washington gives you day-to-day proximity to one of the country’s strongest tech ecosystems in Seattle, while UT Austin places you in a fast-growing, more mixed industry market with especially strong ties in tech, business, engineering, startups, and Texas-based employers. For internships during the school year, that local access matters a lot. Being near major employers can make part-time internships, coffee chats, company events, and quick interview logistics much easier.
For pure local recruiting density, UW has a real advantage if you are leaning tech. Seattle has a deep concentration of major tech employers and engineering roles, and UW students benefit from that proximity through campus events, alumni presence, and in-term opportunities.
UT Austin is also excellent for recruiting, but the pattern is a bit broader. Austin has become a major hub for tech and startups, and UT has strong employer relationships across engineering, business, consulting, government, and energy. UT’s scale, reputation, and alumni network in Texas are especially helpful, and the Austin market can be very active for students who want internships during the semester as well as in the summer.
One subtle difference is competition. At both schools, strong students get strong opportunities, but UW students are competing in a tech-heavy environment where many classmates are aiming at the same set of roles. UT is also competitive, yet the employer mix can make the recruiting landscape feel a little more diversified depending on your major.
If internship access is the main deciding factor and you are especially focused on tech, I’d give UW a slight edge because Seattle is such a powerful local recruiting base. If you want excellent internship options with more cross-industry flexibility and especially strong Texas connections, UT Austin is extremely compelling and may be the more versatile platform.
