Is UT Austin considered more prestigious than the University of Wisconsin?

I’m trying to get a sense of how these two schools are viewed overall, especially by people outside the Midwest and Texas. I know both have strong programs, but I keep hearing different opinions about which one has the stronger reputation.

I’m mainly trying to understand whether UT Austin is generally seen as more prestigious than Wisconsin, or if they’re viewed as roughly the same level.

Yes. Nationally, UT Austin is usually seen as having a bit more overall prestige than the University of Wisconsin–Madison, though the gap is not huge and both are very well-regarded public research universities.

One clear differentiator is program-level reputation. UT Austin has especially strong name recognition in fields like engineering, CS, and business, and those programs often shape how people talk about the university as a whole. Wisconsin is also excellent academically, but its standout reputation is a little more diffuse across many strong departments rather than concentrated in a few nationally prominent preprofessional areas that dominate public perception.

Public perception also depends on who is doing the judging. In some academic, research, or traditional Big Ten contexts, Wisconsin may be viewed as fully peer-level and sometimes even stronger in certain disciplines. But in general public conversation, especially outside the Midwest, UT Austin more often carries the slightly higher-status label overall.
