Which is better for computer science: UT Austin or UCLA?

I’m deciding between UT Austin and UCLA for computer science and I’m trying to compare them beyond just general rankings. I care most about the strength of the CS program, internship and recruiting opportunities, and how the overall student experience feels for a CS major.

I’m a high school senior and this is one of my biggest college decisions right now.

UT Austin has the edge for computer science. Its CS program is one of the most established and better known in the field, and being in Austin puts you next to a very active tech scene with strong recruiting from major companies and startups. For a student focused first on CS depth and access to internships during the school year, UT usually offers the cleaner advantage.

One big differentiator is how directly the department connects to industry. Austin has become a major tech hub, so internships, part-time technical work, networking events, and employer visits are unusually accessible without leaving the city. That matters for CS majors because recruiting is not just about prestige, but about how often companies are on campus and how easy it is to build experience early.

Another difference is the academic environment around the major itself. UT’s computer science program tends to feel especially central and high-priority within the university, with a strong reputation in core areas like systems, AI, theory, and machine learning. UCLA also has a very strong program, but UT is more often the school people single out specifically for computer science rather than for overall institutional reputation.

Student experience is where the comparison gets closer. UCLA offers the Los Angeles setting, a beautiful campus, and a broader big-city college experience that many students love. But for a CS major, UT often feels more practical day to day: lower friction to the tech ecosystem, a strong engineering culture, and a campus environment where CS students are surrounded by peers chasing similar internships and technical projects.

Cost can also tilt this sharply. If you are in-state for Texas, UT becomes especially compelling because it is hard to beat that combination of CS strength and value.
