USC vs. Syracuse for communications: which is better for undergrad career opportunities?

I'm trying to choose between USC and Syracuse for communications, and both seem strong in different ways.

I want a school that will give me solid internship and job opportunities in media, PR, or advertising after graduation, so I'm mostly trying to understand which one has the stronger reputation and network for communications majors.

For undergraduate career opportunities in communications, USC usually has the edge, especially if you want access to media, entertainment, advertising, and PR jobs tied to Los Angeles. USC’s Annenberg school is extremely well known, and being in LA makes internships during the school year much easier because major agencies, studios, production companies, and media organizations are nearby. The Trojan alumni network is also a real advantage in industries where connections matter.

USC tends to fit the student who wants to build a career through proximity and volume of opportunity. If you can see yourself actively networking, taking advantage of semester-time internships, and exploring adjacent fields like entertainment business, digital media, or brand strategy, USC gives you a very strong platform.

Syracuse is still a very strong option, and it can be especially attractive for a student who wants a classic communications powerhouse with a loyal alumni base and strong training in journalism, broadcast, PR, and advertising. The Newhouse name carries real respect, particularly in media circles, and Syracuse graduates do land impressive internships and jobs. It is the kind of place that often appeals to students who want a communications-centered identity on campus and a school where that field has long been one of the signature strengths.

The tradeoff is that Syracuse usually requires more planning around geography. You can absolutely reach New York City and other major markets through alumni, summer internships, and school-supported connections, but you are less likely to have the same constant day-to-day access to industry that USC students get in LA. If your priority is maximizing undergrad career momentum as early as possible, USC is the more powerful option for most students. If you prefer Newhouse’s culture and want a communications program that is highly respected in its own right, Syracuse remains an excellent path.
