Is USC or Stanford considered more prestigious for college admissions and general reputation?

I’m trying to get a better sense of how people compare these two schools when it comes to overall prestige. I know they’re both well-known, but I keep seeing different opinions online about which one carries more weight.

I’m mainly asking about general reputation, not specific majors or campus life.

Stanford is more prestigious in overall reputation and in how it is typically perceived in college admissions. It has a stronger national and international academic brand, is usually seen as one of the small handful of most elite universities in the U.S., and tends to carry more weight in broad conversations about institutional prestige. USC is also highly respected and very well known, but it is not usually placed in quite the same tier for general reputation.

For the student who cares most about how the school name is read at a glance, Stanford has the clearer edge. Its reputation is especially strong across academia, research, technology, entrepreneurship, and high-level graduate and professional circles. When people talk about the most universally prestigious private universities, Stanford is almost always in that short list.

USC fits the student who wants a school with major visibility, a powerful alumni network, and strong name recognition, especially on the West Coast and in industries like entertainment, business, communications, and some pre-professional fields. USC absolutely has prestige, and in some circles its network can feel unusually influential. But in a pure head-to-head on overall institutional reputation, most people would still place Stanford above it.

Part of the confusion online comes from the fact that USC has grown significantly in reputation over time and has a very prominent public image. That can make the gap feel smaller in certain regions or industries. Still, if the question is simply which school is considered more prestigious overall, the more accurate answer is Stanford.
