Is UPenn or Brown better for a collaborative student?

I’m trying to figure out which school would be a better fit for my personality. I do best in environments where people work together and share notes, ideas, and support rather than compete a lot.

I know both UPenn and Brown are strong schools, but I’m more interested in the general campus culture and how collaborative students tend to experience each one.

For a student who really values day-to-day collaboration over competition, Brown usually has the edge. Brown’s open curriculum tends to create a more exploratory, less comparison-heavy atmosphere, and many students describe the culture as supportive, intellectually curious, and willing to share ideas freely. People often choose Brown because they want academic freedom without feeling boxed into a high-pressure track culture.

Brown tends to suit students who like discussing ideas across disciplines, building their own path, and working with classmates in a low-ego way. Because there are fewer core requirements, students are often in classes they actively chose, which can make discussions feel more engaged and less transactional. The social vibe is often seen as friendly and less pre-professional than at Penn, which matters if you want collaboration to feel natural rather than strategic.

Penn can still be collaborative, but it is often a better match for students who are comfortable in an energetic, ambitious environment where teamwork exists alongside a strong career focus. At Penn, especially in more pre-professional circles, students are often very driven toward internships, recruiting, and leadership roles. That does not mean students are cutthroat, but the culture can feel more intense, and some students experience collaboration as highly productive rather than relaxed.

Penn fits students who like being around peers who are constantly building things, joining organizations, and connecting academics to real-world goals. If you enjoy group projects, active student clubs, and a fast pace, Penn can feel exciting and communal. But if what you mean by collaborative is generous, low-pressure, and idea-sharing for its own sake, Brown is more likely to feel aligned with your personality.
