Is Harvard or UPenn better for campus size?
I’m trying to figure out which school would feel more spread out and spacious as a college student. I know both are in major cities, but I’m mostly comparing the overall campus size and how compact or walkable they feel.
I’m a high school senior making a college list, and this is one of the things that matters to me.

Harvard will likely feel more spread out and spacious than Penn. Harvard’s campus is centered in Cambridge with Harvard Yard, the River Houses along the Charles, and academic buildings extending into nearby areas, so it tends to feel like a larger, more distributed university footprint. Penn is very walkable too, but its core campus in West Philadelphia feels denser and more compact, with many major buildings clustered together.
For a student who wants a campus that has more breathing room, Harvard usually fits that preference better. The university is embedded in a city, but it still has a distinct campus feel, and moving between the Yard, the houses, and different academic zones creates more of a sense of space. You are still in an urban environment, yet the campus does not feel as tightly packed into one small area.
Penn tends to suit someone who likes having everything close by. Its campus is easy to navigate on foot, and many academic, residential, and student life buildings sit within a fairly concentrated grid. That makes daily life convenient, but it can also make the school feel less expansive than Harvard.
