Is UPenn or Dartmouth more stressful for undergraduates?

I’m trying to decide where I’d be happier if I get into both, and I keep hearing very different things about the student experience at each school.

I know stress can depend a lot on the person, but I’m mainly wondering which campus tends to feel more intense overall for undergrads.

The biggest practical tradeoff is that Penn tends to feel faster, more career-driven, and more urban, while Dartmouth often feels more close-knit and residential, which can make stress feel different even when academics are still demanding. At Penn, many undergrads talk about a strong pre-professional culture, especially around business, finance, consulting, and recruiting. Dartmouth is also rigorous, but its smaller undergraduate focus and more insulated campus can make the day-to-day atmosphere feel less externally pressured for many students.

If your question is which campus usually feels more intense overall, Penn more often gets that reputation. A lot of that comes from culture rather than just course difficulty: students are surrounded by internship recruiting, networking, and a city environment that keeps opportunities and comparison very visible. That can create a sense that everyone is always doing one more thing.

Dartmouth absolutely has stress too. The quarter-based D-Plan can make terms feel fast, and some students find the social scene and outdoorsy campus culture intense in their own way. But because Dartmouth is smaller, more undergraduate-centered, and less dominated by constant urban professional activity, many students experience the stress as more contained rather than nonstop.

So if you are asking about ambient campus intensity, Penn is more likely to feel stressful to the average undergraduate. Dartmouth is not easy or relaxed in an academic sense, but it more often feels like a place where the pressure comes in waves rather than as a constant background hum.
