Notre Dame vs Duke for accounting: which is the better choice for an undergraduate accounting career?

I’m trying to decide between Notre Dame and Duke and want to study accounting or use undergrad to get ready for a career in accounting. Both schools seem strong overall, but I’m having trouble telling which one has the better path for accounting specifically.

I care most about things like recruiting, internship access, and how helpful the program is for getting started in the field.

For undergraduate accounting specifically, Notre Dame is usually the clearer path. Duke is excellent overall, but it does not offer the same direct undergraduate accounting track, so the route into accounting is less straightforward.

Notre Dame fits the student who wants a structured, on-ramp experience into the profession. If you want accounting classes early, access to faculty and peers focused on the field, and recruiting that is already built around accounting employers, Notre Dame makes that easier. It is especially appealing if you can see yourself pursuing CPA-related coursework, audit, tax, or advisory after graduation.

Mendoza’s undergraduate business setup matters here. Firms that hire for accounting know exactly where to plug into the program, and students benefit from a business school culture where accounting is a normal and visible destination, not a niche interest. That tends to help with internship timing, mentorship, and knowing how to position yourself for junior-year recruiting.

Duke makes more sense for the student who is still broadening their options and wants accounting to be one possibility among several. Duke can absolutely lead to finance, consulting, corporate roles, and even accounting-adjacent work, but you would likely be building a more customized path through economics, public policy, statistics, or another major rather than stepping into a dedicated accounting curriculum. For someone aiming squarely at accounting from day one, that extra flexibility is not necessarily an advantage.

If your priority is the cleanest undergraduate launch into accounting, Notre Dame has the stronger setup. Duke carries tremendous name recognition, but for accounting recruiting, internship access, and preparation tied specifically to the field, Notre Dame is the more targeted option.
