Is Notre Dame or UChicago generally considered more prestigious for college admissions and reputation?

I’m a high school junior trying to understand how people compare these two schools in terms of overall prestige. I know they’re both well known, but I keep seeing different opinions depending on who I ask.

I’m not asking about fit or specific majors, just how they’re generally viewed when it comes to reputation.

UChicago is usually viewed as having the stronger overall academic prestige, especially in national and international academic circles, while Notre Dame has a very strong reputation of its own and often carries exceptional name recognition with alumni, employers, and families in certain regions and networks. In college admissions, UChicago is more often grouped with the most academically rarefied private universities, and its reputation is closely tied to intellectual intensity, research, and economics, political science, and the core curriculum. Notre Dame is highly respected, but people more often associate it with a broader traditional campus identity, undergraduate teaching, school spirit, and a powerful alumni network.

One concrete difference is how each school is talked about in elite academic settings. UChicago tends to come up alongside places known for theory, scholarship, and rigorous classroom culture, and its brand has a distinctly academic edge. Notre Dame is certainly respected academically, but its public image is less centered on intellectual severity and more on being a top Catholic university with a loyal national following.

Another differentiator is where the reputation is strongest. Notre Dame’s name is incredibly potent in the Midwest, among Catholic communities, and in business and alumni-driven circles, partly because of its sports visibility and unusually engaged graduates. UChicago’s reputation is often stronger among academics, researchers, and people who closely follow higher education, where it is seen as especially elite and cerebral.

A final distinction is undergraduate visibility versus scholarly prestige. Notre Dame is one of the most recognizable private universities in the country to the general public, which matters for broad name recognition. UChicago, though, is more likely to be perceived as the more prestigious institution in conversations specifically about academic standing and selectivity.
