Is UNC or the University of Georgia better for public health majors?

I’m a high school senior trying to decide between UNC and Georgia for college, and I’m interested in public health. I know both schools have strong reputations overall, but I’m trying to figure out which one is generally better for someone who wants to study public health and maybe pursue that field after graduation.

UNC has the edge for public health. The biggest reason is that UNC’s Gillings School of Global Public Health is one of the most established and nationally respected public health schools in the country, and undergraduates can tap into that ecosystem early through coursework, research, and connections across areas like epidemiology, health policy, and biostatistics. If you already know public health is a likely path, UNC offers a deeper academic infrastructure around that field.

At Georgia, you can absolutely study health-related subjects and prepare well for public health careers or grad school, but the university is not centered around a standalone public health school in the same way.

Research and professional exposure also tilt toward UNC. Because Gillings is a major graduate public health hub, there are more faculty, labs, institutes, and public health-focused partnerships concentrated on one campus. That tends to create more obvious opportunities for undergrads to get involved in public health work during the school year, especially if you want experience that connects directly to agencies, community health initiatives, or policy-oriented projects.

Career momentum in the field is another meaningful separator. UNC’s public health brand carries real weight with employers and graduate programs, especially in North Carolina and across the broader public health world. Georgia is an excellent university and can still get you to MPH programs or health-related jobs, but for public health specifically, UNC is the more targeted and better-developed place to study it.
