Which is better for internships: UNC or George Washington University?

George Washington University has the edge for internships during the academic year. Its location in Washington, DC puts students close to federal agencies, nonprofits, think tanks, media organizations, consulting firms, and policy-focused employers, so part-time internships during the semester are much more built into campus life.

The biggest differentiator is simple access. At GW, students can often commute quickly to internships while taking classes, which matters a lot if you specifically want strong in-semester opportunities rather than waiting for summer. In DC, employers are used to hiring students for semester-long roles, especially in politics, international affairs, public policy, communications, public health, and nonprofit work.

UNC has excellent career outcomes and a very strong alumni network, but Chapel Hill is not set up the same way for frequent in-semester internships. You can absolutely intern through opportunities in the Research Triangle, especially in business, healthcare, tech, and research, but those roles are usually more spread out geographically and often less seamlessly tied into everyday student life than they are at GW. For many UNC students, summer becomes the more natural time for major internships.

Employer mix is another important difference. GW benefits from being in the middle of organizations that regularly bring on students for policy, government, advocacy, and adjacent office-based work. UNC’s nearby ecosystem is excellent too, especially with Raleigh-Durham and RTP, but it is less concentrated right around campus and often more car-dependent, which can make semester internships less convenient.

If your main question is which school gives you the more realistic setup to intern consistently during the school year, GW is the clearer answer.
