UNC vs NYU for business school prep: which is better for undergrad business school preparation?

I’m trying to decide between UNC and NYU for undergrad and I’m interested in business school later on. I know both schools can lead to strong opportunities, but I’m mainly wondering which one is generally better for preparing a student for business school applications and the classes, internships, and experiences that help most.

I’m a high school senior trying to think ahead, so I want to choose the school that gives the strongest overall prep for that path.

The biggest practical tradeoff is structured undergraduate business access at UNC versus location-driven networking and internship access at NYU. UNC’s Kenan-Flagler is a very established undergraduate business program, so if you get into the business major, you can build a clear foundation in accounting, finance, economics, analytics, and leadership on a traditional campus. NYU, especially through Stern, gives you proximity to employers in New York and makes in-semester internships much easier to stack early.

For business school preparation specifically, both can work very well because MBA programs care most about strong grades, leadership, work experience, and clear career progression after college. Undergrad business school itself is not required for later MBA admission, so what matters is whether the school helps you earn strong academics, land solid internships, and develop a credible post-grad path. UNC does that especially well if you want a more classic college experience and a defined business curriculum. NYU does it especially well if you want to be immersed in a professional environment from the start.

One important wrinkle is access. At UNC, not every student is directly in Kenan-Flagler from day one, so the path into the business major matters a lot. At NYU, the answer depends heavily on whether you were admitted to Stern or another division, because Stern is a very different business-prep experience from being at NYU without direct business-school enrollment.

If the question is pure undergrad preparation for later business school applications, I’d give UNC a slight edge for most students because it often offers a more balanced setup for maintaining a high GPA, building leadership on campus, and getting strong business training without needing to hustle quite as hard just to access opportunities. If you are already in NYU Stern and you know you want finance, consulting, or a career tightly tied to New York recruiting, NYU becomes very compelling and could be the smarter launch point.
