Is University of Minnesota or Boston College harder to get into?

I’m trying to get a better sense of how these two schools compare for college admissions. I know one is public and the other is private, but I’m not sure how that affects how selective they are.

I’m asking because both are on my list and I want to understand which one is generally considered harder to get into.

Boston College is harder to get into than the University of Minnesota in the usual admissions sense. BC is a private university with a more selective applicant pool overall, and it is widely viewed as a reachier school than the University of Minnesota Twin Cities. The public versus private difference matters some, but the bigger factor is that BC receives a very large number of applications from students targeting highly selective private universities.

For a student with strong grades and rigorous coursework, Boston College still tends to be the more difficult admit because it expects a very high academic profile and is often looking for a cohesive, well-presented application beyond academics alone. Its admissions process is also shaped by the kind of applicant pool it attracts: many students applying to BC are also applying to other nationally selective schools, which raises the bar.

The University of Minnesota Twin Cities is certainly respected and can be quite competitive for some majors or programs, but in overall university admission it is typically more accessible than Boston College. As a large public flagship, Minnesota has more seats and a broader range of applicants, which usually makes its general admit landscape less restrictive than BC’s.

One detail worth keeping in mind is that Minnesota can feel more or less selective depending on whether you are in-state, out-of-state, or applying to a particularly sought-after program. But if the question is simply which school is harder to get into overall, Boston College is the clearer answer.
