Which is better for engineering: University of Minnesota or Northeastern?

I’m trying to compare these two schools for engineering and keep going back and forth. I’m mostly looking at the overall strength of the engineering program, reputation with employers, and what the student experience is like.

Since both seem solid, I’m wondering which one is generally considered the better choice for an engineering major.

For engineering, University of Minnesota usually has the edge on academic depth and breadth, while Northeastern stands out more for co-op and built-in work experience.

One big differentiator is the engineering ecosystem itself. Minnesota has a more classic, comprehensive engineering setup with substantial research, strong facilities, and deep departmental offerings across fields like mechanical, civil, chemical, electrical, and biomedical-related areas. If you want the feel of a major public research university where engineering is a central academic powerhouse, Minnesota is hard to beat.

Another difference is employer access. Northeastern has built a national identity around co-op, and that matters a lot for engineering students because it gives you repeated, structured industry experience before graduation. That can make the path from classroom to internship to full-time job feel more direct, especially if you want a program that is intentionally organized around work placement.

The student experience is also pretty different. Minnesota offers more of a traditional Big Ten campus environment in Minneapolis, with a large engineering community and the resources that come with a major state flagship. Northeastern feels more urban and career-driven, with students often cycling in and out of classes because of co-op schedules, so the day-to-day rhythm is less like a conventional campus experience.

On pure engineering strength, I’d lean Minnesota. On career integration during college, Northeastern makes a very strong case.
