UMass Amherst vs University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign for computer science: which is better for undergrad CS?

UIUC has the edge for undergraduate computer science. Its CS department is one of the most established and widely recognized in the country, major tech employers recruit there very heavily, and the degree tends to carry more weight nationally in CS circles. For pure undergrad CS strength, reputation, and recruiting reach, UIUC is the stronger option.

One concrete difference is employer recruiting. UIUC is a major destination for big tech, trading firms, startups, and research-oriented employers, and its CS program has a long track record of feeding students into highly competitive internships and full-time roles. UMass Amherst also places students well, especially in the Northeast, but UIUC usually offers broader and deeper recruiting volume for CS.

Another difference is department scale and depth. UIUC’s CS ecosystem is unusually large, with extensive upper-level electives, strong research labs, and a very deep bench across areas like systems, AI, theory, machine learning, and computer engineering-adjacent work. That matters even for undergrads because it usually means more specialized courses, more active student organizations in CS, and more ways to plug into serious technical work.

Reputation is also not quite the same. UMass Amherst CS is well respected and absolutely a strong program, but UIUC has a more powerful national and international brand in computer science specifically. When people in tech or academia think of top public-school CS programs, UIUC is almost always in that conversation immediately.

The main reason to choose UMass Amherst instead would usually be cost, personal fit, or location rather than CS strength alone. If the price difference is significant or you strongly prefer being in the Northeast, UMass can still be an excellent outcome. But on the question of which school is better for undergrad CS in overall program quality, recruiting, and reputation, UIUC comes out ahead.
