Is Harvard worth the extra cost compared with the University of Maryland for an undergraduate degree?

I’m trying to decide between applying to a school like the University of Maryland and a school like Harvard. Maryland would be a lot more affordable for my family, but Harvard obviously has the bigger name.

I’m mainly wondering whether the long-term value of a Harvard degree is actually worth the extra cost compared with a strong public university.

Harvard is not automatically worth the extra cost over the University of Maryland for an undergraduate degree. If Maryland would be much more affordable, that difference matters a lot, especially because UMD is a strong flagship with excellent outcomes in areas like computer science, engineering, business, and government-related fields thanks to its location near Washington, DC. Harvard’s name, alumni network, and access to certain elite recruiting pipelines are real advantages, but they do not justify taking on major debt in every case.

Harvard makes the most sense for a student who wants the broadest possible national and international brand, expects to pursue paths where prestige and concentrated networks can matter early, and can attend without creating serious financial strain. That can include some students interested in finance, consulting, certain academic or research tracks, or highly selective fellowships and graduate programs. Harvard also tends to offer unusually strong access to faculty, funding, and cross-disciplinary opportunities, and its financial aid can be far better than families first assume.

Maryland is often the smarter choice for a student who wants a high-quality education with lower cost, more flexibility after graduation, and strong professional opportunities without paying for the Harvard label. UMD has especially strong practical advantages for students who want internships during the school year, federal agency connections, or industry access in the DC corridor. For many careers, employers care much more about grades, internships, research, and skills than about whether your diploma says Harvard.

The key question is not whether Harvard is more prestigious, because it is. The real question is whether that prestige is worth the actual net price your family would pay after aid. If Harvard’s net cost ends up close to Maryland’s, Harvard can be worth choosing. If Harvard would require substantially more borrowing or financial pressure, Maryland is very often the higher-value undergraduate option.
