Maryland vs. Michigan for computer science: which is better for undergraduate CS?

I’m trying to decide between the University of Maryland and the University of Michigan for computer science. I’ve heard both are strong, but I want to understand which one tends to be the better choice for an undergrad CS student overall.

I care most about academics, internship opportunities, and how well the program sets students up for jobs or grad school.

On academics, Michigan offers a wider and more layered undergraduate experience across computer science, computer engineering, math, robotics, data science, and interdisciplinary tech fields. The course selection is deep, research activity is extensive, and there are many ways to branch into adjacent areas without leaving a strong CS core. Maryland is very strong academically too, but Michigan usually feels broader in both specialization options and the scale of its engineering environment.

For internships and recruiting, Michigan benefits from a huge employer base that treats Ann Arbor as a major target campus. Large tech companies, quant firms, startups, and engineering employers all recruit there, and the alumni network is especially powerful across the Midwest, coasts, and major tech hubs. Maryland has real advantages too, particularly for students interested in cybersecurity, defense, federal research labs, and DC-area employers, so its location can be a meaningful plus depending on the kind of tech work you want.

For jobs and grad school, Michigan tends to give slightly stronger all-around brand leverage. A Michigan CS degree is very well recognized nationally, and students regularly move into top industry roles as well as strong master’s and PhD programs. Maryland still places well and can be an especially smart pick if cost is significantly lower or if your interests line up with its strengths near Washington, but on the full package for undergrad CS, Michigan usually comes out ahead.
