Maryland vs University of South Carolina for party life: which has the stronger social scene?

I’m trying to get a feel for the social life at these two schools because that matters a lot to me when I visit. I’m a high school senior looking at both Maryland and the University of South Carolina, and I keep hearing different things about party culture at each one.

I’m mainly wondering which school is generally known for having the more active party scene and what the overall weekend social vibe is like.

University of South Carolina is more widely known for the stronger, more central party scene. Its social life is more SEC-style, with football weekends, Greek life, and a campus culture where big social events are a major part of student life. Maryland has plenty going on too, but the vibe is usually less dominated by parties and more mixed because of its location near Washington, DC and a student body with a wider range of weekend routines.

At South Carolina, tailgates and game days are a huge part of the social calendar, and Greek life tends to be more visible in shaping weekend plans. Even students who are not heavily involved in fraternities or sororities still feel the energy of that scene, especially in the fall. The atmosphere is often described as outgoing, school-spirited, and socially centered around campus traditions.

At Maryland, the party scene exists, especially through bars, apartments, and some Greek life, but it usually feels less all-consuming. A lot of students split their time between campus events, nearby College Park spots, and opportunities in DC, so the weekend culture is broader than just parties. That can make Maryland feel more balanced socially, but not as intensely party-focused.

When people compare the two specifically for party life, South Carolina usually has the edge in terms of how visible and campus-defining the social scene feels. Maryland is social and active, just not as consistently known for a big party identity.
