Is the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign more prestigious than the University of Wisconsin-Madison?

I’m trying to compare these two schools for my college list and keep seeing different opinions about which one has more prestige. Both seem strong, but I’m not sure how they’re generally viewed by employers and grad schools.

I want to understand the overall reputation difference between UIUC and Wisconsin-Madison.

UIUC is usually seen as having a slight edge in prestige overall, especially in engineering, computer science, and some tech-adjacent fields, while Wisconsin-Madison is viewed as very close behind and in some circles essentially on the same tier. Both are flagship public research universities with national name recognition, strong faculty, and serious respect from employers and graduate programs. The difference is real but not dramatic, and it matters most when you are comparing specific majors rather than the universities in the abstract.

One concrete differentiator is program-level reputation. UIUC has an especially strong national image in engineering, CS, data-related fields, and quantitative disciplines, so in those areas its name can carry a bit more immediate weight. Wisconsin-Madison is also highly respected in STEM, but it is especially well regarded across a broader spread of areas including economics, the biological sciences, political science, and many humanities and social science departments.

Another difference is how each school is perceived by employers and grad schools. Recruiters and admissions committees tend to know both institutions well because both produce large numbers of strong graduates and have major research output. In practice, they are far more likely to care about your major, coursework, GPA, research, internships, and recommendations than to treat UIUC versus Wisconsin as a major prestige gap.

The last thing to keep in mind is geographic and industry context. UIUC often gets a little extra shine in tech and engineering-heavy settings, while Wisconsin-Madison has an exceptionally durable academic reputation and broad alumni reach, particularly in the Midwest and in fields outside engineering. So if you are asking purely about overall reputation, UIUC has a small advantage in many people’s minds, but Wisconsin-Madison is absolutely in the same conversation and not a meaningful step down.
