Is University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign or UC Berkeley better for computer science?
I’m a high school senior trying to narrow down my college list for computer science. I keep seeing UIUC and UC Berkeley mentioned as top programs, but I’m not sure how to compare them in a way that actually matters for an undergrad.
I’m mainly trying to understand which one is generally considered stronger for CS.

The biggest practical tradeoff is this: Berkeley tends to carry more broad-name prestige and proximity to the Bay Area tech ecosystem, while UIUC is often praised for a more straightforward, deeply established CS identity with exceptional recruiting and a huge engineering culture. For undergraduate computer science, both are considered top-tier and highly respected by employers. In actual outcomes, either school can open doors to major tech companies, research, startups, and graduate study.
Berkeley is often the school people mention first in casual prestige conversations because its overall academic reputation is so high and its location connects students closely to Silicon Valley. It has a very strong theory and research reputation, and being in the Bay Area can make networking, internships during the school year, and startup exposure feel especially immediate.
UIUC, though, is absolutely not a step behind in any meaningful undergraduate CS sense. Its CS program has an outstanding long-term reputation, major employer recognition, and one of the strongest engineering-centered environments in the country. Many students and recruiters see UIUC CS as every bit as serious as Berkeley CS, especially for technical depth, recruiting, and alumni presence in software and systems-oriented fields.
If the question is which is generally considered stronger, the fairest answer is that Berkeley may have a slight edge in overall prestige and visibility, but UIUC is in the same top group and is not meaningfully weaker for undergrad CS. In practice, the difference is usually much smaller than applicants expect. Once you are comparing these two, factors like cost, direct admission structure, class access, campus environment, and where you want to live matter more than trying to separate them by a tiny reputation gap.
