University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign vs Brown for computer science: which is better for undergrad CS?

The biggest practical tradeoff is depth and scale versus flexibility and broader undergraduate experience. UIUC has one of the most established and expansive undergraduate CS ecosystems in the country, with a very large department, many advanced electives, major recruiting presence, and deep ties to engineering and computing research. Brown offers excellent CS too, but in a smaller, more flexible setting shaped by the Open Curriculum, with easier room to combine CS with humanities, design, entrepreneurship, or math in a less rigid way.

For academics in CS alone, UIUC usually has the edge. Its course breadth, faculty scale, specialized subfields, and overall intensity in systems, AI, theory, architecture, data, and adjacent engineering areas make it especially strong for students who want a highly technical education and lots of options within CS. Brown’s CS department is very well regarded and serious, but the experience is more intimate and less centered on a giant engineering machine.

For internships and career outcomes, both can place students very well, especially into top tech companies, research labs, and startups. UIUC benefits from sheer employer volume and a long-standing reputation among tech recruiters, particularly for core software engineering and technical roles. Brown benefits from its brand, strong alumni network, and proximity to East Coast startup and finance circles, but for undergrad CS specifically, UIUC is often viewed as the more directly powerful recruiting platform.

Student experience matters a lot here because these schools feel very different. UIUC is a classic large public research university with big classes, big school energy, and a more structured engineering culture. Brown is more individualized, discussion-friendly, and exploratory, which can be a real advantage if you want intellectual freedom and are not looking for a heavily pre-professional environment.

If the question is strictly which school is better for undergraduate CS, I would give UIUC the nod. Brown becomes the more compelling choice when you value curricular freedom, smaller-scale undergraduate life, and the ability to shape a CS education that is less confined to a traditional engineering framework.
