Is UConn or UC Davis better for animal science?

I'm trying to decide between UConn and UC Davis for animal science and want to pick the better fit for the major itself. I’m especially interested in how strong the program is for hands-on learning and preparing for careers in animal science.

I’m a high school student trying to figure out which school would be the stronger choice for this major.

The biggest practical tradeoff is breadth and industry scale versus a somewhat smaller, more close-knit program. UC Davis has one of the most established animal science environments in the country, with extensive farm and animal facilities, strong ties to California agriculture, and a very large network in animal biology, dairy, equine, livestock, and pre-vet pathways. UConn also offers solid hands-on animal science training, but Davis is operating on a bigger stage for this major specifically.

For hands-on learning, UC Davis stands out because animal science is a major strength of the university, not just one department among many. Students benefit from teaching and research centers tied to different species and production systems, and the campus has deep connections to agricultural research and veterinary medicine. That usually translates into more options for labs, internships, faculty specialties, and exposure to different parts of the field.

UConn is still a credible choice, especially if you want a program where it may be easier to build relationships with professors earlier and navigate opportunities in a somewhat less sprawling environment. Its College of Agriculture, Health and Natural Resources gives animal science students practical experiences, and it can be a good setup for students interested in research, animal care, or continuing on to veterinary-related work.

For career preparation, UC Davis has the clearer advantage. Employers and graduate programs know it well for animal and agricultural sciences, and the range of species, research areas, and applied training is unusually deep. If your question is strictly which school is stronger for animal science itself, UC Davis is the stronger pick.
