How does CU Boulder compare to the University of Amsterdam for study abroad appeal?

I’m trying to figure out which school would feel more appealing for study abroad opportunities and the overall experience. CU Boulder and the University of Amsterdam both seem really different, and I want to understand how they compare in terms of the kind of global exposure, travel access, and campus experience a student can expect.

I’m not asking about a specific major, just which one tends to have stronger overall study abroad appeal for a high school student thinking about college.

For study abroad appeal specifically, the University of Amsterdam usually has the bigger draw. You would already be studying in another country, in a major European capital, with easy train and budget-flight access to dozens of cities and cultures. CU Boulder has solid global opportunities too, but its appeal is more about having a classic U.S. campus experience first and then adding international programs onto that.

University of Amsterdam tends to fit a student who wants everyday international exposure built into college life. Amsterdam is highly international, and daily life puts you in contact with students from across Europe and beyond. Travel is a major part of the appeal here because weekend and break trips to other countries are genuinely realistic in a way they usually are not from most U.S. campuses.

It also suits someone excited by a city-based university rather than a traditional enclosed campus. UvA is woven into Amsterdam, so the experience feels urban, independent, and globally connected. For a high school student imagining college as a launch point into Europe, that can be very compelling.

CU Boulder makes more sense for someone who wants a strong residential campus atmosphere, school spirit, and the social structure of a large American university, while still keeping study abroad available. Boulder offers semester, summer, and faculty-led programs, and students can absolutely build an international experience there. But the global element is more something you pursue through programs, not something embedded in your surroundings every day.

Boulder also appeals to students who care as much about lifestyle as international access. The setting is scenic, outdoorsy, and campus-centered, which creates a very different feel from Amsterdam. If your idea of an exciting college experience includes mountains, athletics, and a distinct campus community, CU Boulder may feel more attractive even if it is less inherently international.
