Is CU Boulder or Ohio State harder to get into?

Ohio State is typically viewed as a bit harder to get into than CU Boulder for general admission. Both are large, well-known public universities with plenty of applicants, but Ohio State usually has the more selective overall admissions reputation. That said, neither school has one uniform level of difficulty across every applicant pool, and residency, major interest, and academic profile can all shift the picture.

Ohio State tends to draw a very broad national applicant pool while also being a top choice for many in-state students, so the competition can feel tighter overall. It is especially the kind of school where strong grades in a solid high school curriculum matter a lot, and many applicants see it as a high-demand flagship with a slightly more selective baseline.

CU Boulder is also selective, but for many students it is seen as somewhat more accessible overall than Ohio State. It attracts lots of out-of-state interest, especially from students looking for a classic big public university experience in Colorado, but its overall admissions difficulty is usually discussed as a notch below Ohio State’s.

For building a college list, I’d treat Ohio State as the more competitive of the two in a general sense, with CU Boulder a little less difficult but still far from automatic. If your academic record is right around the middle of what strong flagship applicants present, that difference can matter. If you are applying to a particularly competitive major, though, it makes more sense to compare that specific program than the university as a whole.
