Tufts vs UVA for value: which school has the better return on investment for undergrads?

I’m trying to decide between Tufts and UVA, and I keep hearing people talk about “value” and return on investment. I’m a junior/senior looking at how much the degree is worth compared with the cost, since I don’t want to overpay if one option doesn’t give a big advantage later.

I’m mainly trying to understand which school is generally considered the better value for an undergraduate degree.

For most undergraduates, UVA is usually seen as the stronger value, especially for Virginia residents. Its tuition is much lower in-state, and it still offers a very strong national reputation, deep alumni reach, and excellent recruiting in fields like business, consulting, finance, government, and public policy. Tufts is highly respected too, but its higher price tag often makes the ROI case harder unless your financial aid is significantly better there or you are drawn to a program where Tufts has a particularly strong fit.

UVA tends to make the most sense for students who want a classic large-university experience with broad name recognition and lots of employer pipelines. Even outside business, the school has enough scale, alumni connections, and recruiting infrastructure that many students feel they get a lot for what they pay.

Tufts tends to appeal more to students who want a smaller, more intimate academic environment with a liberal-arts feel but university-level resources. It has a strong reputation in international relations, pre-med, and interdisciplinary work, and being near Boston adds access to internships and hospitals. But from a pure value standpoint, Tufts often needs to come with substantial grant aid to compete financially, because the sticker price is high and the career outcomes, while excellent, are not usually so much stronger than UVA’s that they automatically justify the extra cost.

The practical way to think about it is this: UVA wins the ROI conversation more often when cost is a major factor, particularly in-state. Tufts becomes more compelling when the net price is close to UVA’s or when you specifically want its smaller scale, advising style, and academic culture enough that those benefits matter to you in a real, daily way.
