Tufts vs Columbia for city life: which campus has a stronger urban experience?
I’m trying to figure out which school would feel more connected to a real city day to day. I know Tufts is near Boston and Columbia is in New York, but I’m not sure how much that actually changes student life.
I care a lot about being able to get off campus easily, explore the city, and feel like the school is part of the surrounding area.

Columbia has the stronger day to day urban experience. Its campus sits in Manhattan, directly on the subway, and students step into New York almost immediately when they leave the gates. That changes student life in a practical way: internships, restaurants, museums, neighborhoods, performances, and everyday errands are woven into the normal rhythm of the week, not something that feels like a separate trip.
Columbia tends to fit students who want the city to function as an extension of campus. Mornings can include grabbing food off campus, evenings can mean a quick train ride downtown, and the surrounding neighborhood feels active and dense in a way that is unmistakably urban. Even though Columbia has a defined enclosed campus, you are still living inside one of the world’s biggest cities, and that is hard to replicate.
Tufts is better for someone who wants access to a major city without feeling immersed in it every minute. The Medford and Somerville setting has plenty nearby, and students can get into Boston by transit, but Tufts itself feels more like a traditional residential campus with a separate college environment. In everyday life, Boston is accessible rather than fully integrated into the campus experience.
That difference matters if you care about spontaneity. At Columbia, city life is immediate and constant. At Tufts, exploring the city is very doable, but it usually takes a bit more intention and planning, and many students spend more of their time in the campus bubble or in nearby local areas rather than moving through a major downtown setting every day.
So for feeling connected to a real city on a daily basis, Columbia stands out clearly. Tufts gives you a nice balance of campus community plus nearby urban access, but Columbia is the one that feels most embedded in city life.
