UChicago vs Notre Dame for finance: which is better for breaking into investment banking and finance careers?

I'm trying to decide between UChicago and Notre Dame, and finance is the main thing I want to study. I know both schools have strong reputations, but I keep seeing different opinions about which one is better for getting into investment banking and other finance jobs.

Since I want a school that gives me the best recruiting and career opportunities, I'm trying to understand which one has the stronger edge for finance.

For investment banking and high-level finance recruiting, UChicago has the clearer edge. Notre Dame still does very well, especially in traditional banking pipelines and alumni-driven recruiting, but UChicago usually opens more doors across a wider range of finance paths.

UChicago makes the most sense for a student who wants the broadest access to elite finance recruiting and is comfortable in a more intense, analytical environment. The school’s economics reputation is outstanding, and being in Hyde Park puts you in a major financial city during the school year.

It is also the stronger choice for someone who may want flexibility within finance. If you start out thinking investment banking but later get interested in asset management, research, fintech, or quant, UChicago usually gives you more range.

Notre Dame fits a different kind of student really well: someone who wants a more traditional campus culture, a tighter alumni network, and a finance path that can feel a little more relationship-driven. Notre Dame’s Mendoza College of Business is highly respected, and the alumni base is famously loyal. For students who are proactive and good at networking, that can translate into strong outcomes in banking, especially in cities where Notre Dame alumni are active on Wall Street and in Chicago.

One thing to keep in mind is that Notre Dame may feel more straightforward if you want an undergraduate business setting from the start. UChicago is more theory-heavy and less preprofessional in vibe, even though the outcomes are excellent. So if you are very certain about finance but want a more classic business-school environment and strong alumni support, Notre Dame has real appeal.

If the question is purely which school gives the stronger edge for breaking into investment banking and top finance careers, I’d lean UChicago. Notre Dame is absolutely credible in finance, but UChicago tends to carry more weight at the highest end of recruiting and offers more upside across finance subfields.
