UChicago vs MIT for undergraduate research opportunities: which has more access and support?
I’m trying to compare UChicago and MIT mainly for undergrad research, not just overall prestige. I want to understand which school tends to make it easier for students to get into labs, work with professors, and start research earlier.

MIT has the edge for undergraduate research access and support, especially if your priority is getting involved early and finding a well-built system for joining labs. Its Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program, or UROP, is one of the most established undergraduate research structures in the country, and it is designed specifically to connect undergrads with faculty projects. That matters a lot for a motivated student without prior research experience, because the process is more visible, more normalized, and often easier to navigate from the start.
At MIT, research is woven directly into the undergraduate culture rather than feeling like an extra you have to discover on your own. The practical result is that a student who is eager but new to research usually has more institutional help translating that interest into an actual lab role.

UChicago is especially compelling if you are drawn to theoretical work, fundamental science, economics, or research tied closely to intense academic inquiry, but for broad undergraduate access and built-in support, MIT is the more straightforward place to do it.
