Is UC Santa Barbara or UCLA better for political science?

I’m trying to choose between UC Santa Barbara and UCLA, and political science is my main interest. I know both are strong UC schools, but I keep seeing different opinions about which one is better for poli sci.

I’m mostly trying to understand which school has the stronger political science program overall for an undergrad interested in that major.

UCLA has the edge for undergraduate political science. Its department has broader course coverage across American politics, comparative politics, international relations, political theory, and methods, and the school’s Los Angeles location creates more direct access to internships with government offices, advocacy groups, media organizations, and policy nonprofits during the academic year.

One big differentiator is proximity to professional opportunities. UCLA students can more easily build a resume while classes are in session through internships tied to city politics, state and federal field offices, legal organizations, and issue-based nonprofits. For political science specifically, that matters because undergrads often benefit a lot from hands-on experience before applying to law school, public policy programs, or entry-level political work.

Another difference is scale and visibility within the discipline. UCLA’s political science department is widely recognized, supports a large range of faculty research areas, and tends to offer more depth if your interests shift as you go, whether that ends up being elections, political behavior, international conflict, race and politics, or public law. That kind of breadth is useful for undergrads who are still figuring out exactly where they want to focus.

UCSB is still a very strong option, and its political science department has a solid academic reputation. In some ways, it can offer a more relaxed environment and potentially a less overwhelming undergraduate experience, which some students prefer. But if the question is which school is stronger overall for political science as an undergrad, UCLA is the clearer answer because of the combination of departmental breadth, name recognition in the field, and year-round access to relevant opportunities outside the classroom.
