Is UC Santa Barbara or UC Davis better for a laid-back college culture?
I'm trying to figure out which school would feel less intense day to day. I want a campus where people are still focused on academics, but the overall vibe is more relaxed and not super competitive.
I know both are strong schools, but I'm mostly trying to compare the general social atmosphere, stress level, and whether one feels more laid back than the other.

UC Santa Barbara is usually the one people describe as more laid-back day to day. Its beach setting, the culture around Isla Vista, and the school’s social energy give it a more relaxed feel, even though students still take academics seriously. UC Davis can also be friendly and not cutthroat, but its atmosphere often comes across as more low-key, practical, and academically steady than breezy.
UCSB tends to fit students who want a strong social scene woven into everyday life. The campus is physically beautiful and right by the ocean, which really does shape the mood. Students often talk about an easygoing, outdoorsy, social environment, and the surrounding college town makes campus life feel immersive in a way that contributes to that relaxed culture.
UC Davis often fits students who want a calmer, more grounded version of laid-back. It is known for being collaborative and welcoming rather than overly competitive, and many students find it less intense than other UC campuses. But the vibe is usually more centered on routines, clubs, research, biking around campus, and a classic college-town feel than on the kind of beach-adjacent social atmosphere UCSB is known for.
If your main question is which one feels less intense in a social and cultural sense, UCSB usually wins that comparison. If you mean laid-back as in friendly people, less academic posturing, and a comfortable everyday environment, Davis has a strong case too. The difference is that UCSB feels more carefree, while Davis feels more balanced and down-to-earth.
